Introduction: A Little Something About Me!

Hey guys! So I’m usually pretty bad at this “about me” stuff so I’ll just start with the basics. My name is Parth and I’m currently a junior here at the University of Oklahoma studying Microbiology/Pre-Med. I plan on graduating in May 2016, barring any complications! I am involved in a couple campus organizations such as Pre-Med Club and the Oklahoma Undergraduate India Society (OUIS). I am also an active member of Delta Epsilon Psi, which is a multicultural social and service fraternity. I have also volunteered to be a part of the Medical Brigade that will be going to Panama this upcoming semester and I’m really excited for that! I want to go out and do something that will make a difference in less fortunate countries and this is a golden opportunity!

This is me! (taken by a friend of mine)

Before I moved to Norman, I lived in a few other places. I was born on July 4th, 1994 in Salt Lake City, UT. I don’t really remember Salt Lake City that much, but I hope to go back and visit there soon! When I was two and a half years old, my family and I moved to a small town called Ardmore, OK where my parents bought a hotel and basically jump started their life. Ardmore is where I call home because I lived there for thirteen years. After my sophomore year at Ardmore High School, my parents decided to buy another hotel in Burleson, TX so then we proceeded to move there. That was a huge decision considering I had spent my whole life in Ardmore but I dealt with it and it ended up okay. I played on the varsity basketball team there and graduated in May 2012. After that, I obviously came back to Oklahoma to go to OU!

Growing up, I was always allergic to furry pets so I only ever got to have fish as pets. Recently though, I realized that I’m not allergic to cats anymore so my roommates and I all pitched in to get a Bengal cat! His name is Shere Khan, or SK for short, and he is probable the best random decision I have ever made! He’ll be a year old next month.

This is SK when he was 8 weeks old, we had just got him (photo taken by me)

Besides all that, I’m really just a laid back person who loves to meet new people. I want to be a successful doctor in the upcoming future but I haven’t decided yet what I want to specialize in. Medicine is so vast though so I feel like I’ll figure it out once I make it to medical school. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!

  2. It's so nice to have someone from OUIS in class, Parth - please let me know about upcoming events or anything at all like that, or any videos you all share at YouTube. I will be so glad to share that in the announcements! And your Shere Khan looks like such a cutie! I bet he is all grown up now: we adopted a stray cat about a year ago, and he is such a big boy now compared to the little guy we found lost in the woods. And I've been thinking that I would really like to try to find a way to make Kipling's Jungle Book one of the possible extra readings for this class... we all need some Shere Khan in our lives! The stories in Jungle Book are pretty long, but they are so much fun to read. You'll see later on in the semester how I'll be asking you guys to help me figure out how I can develop an "UnTextbook" for this class like in the Myth-Folklore class so that there would actually be no books to buy at all, just the free books that are online. And Kipling's books fall into that category! :-)

  3. Hi Parth! Your Panama trip sounds so exciting! I used to be Pre-Med as well, before I switched to English writing (thanks to ochem). And your Bengal cat is absolutely adorable! I've always wanted one, except that most of my family, myself included, are allergic. Since you and your roommates all pitched in to get a cat, where will he go post-grad?

  4. Hi Parth! I hope you have a blast in Panama, one of my friends is Panamanian and she has told me amazing things. And your cat is so cute! That's awesome that you're not allergic to cats anymore. I actually had two cats growing up that had an uncommon type of fur, so not many people were allergic to them.

  5. I am so in love with your cat, it is literally the cutest. I love that you're going to Panama!!! You will have the most humbling experience being in their community. I would definitely brush up on Spanish beforehand. It will help you a lot to communicate with the locals there and bring you closer to Panama itself. Good luck with the MCAT!! You'll do great!

  6. Parth, your cat is super cute! I also used to be allergic to cats until I learned that I wasn’t at a point in my life and got one as well. I also know a lot of people from Ardmore because I grew up in Norman. You sound like such a busy person being apart of so many organizations while having such a complicated major. I hope the rest of your time at OU is complication free and awesome!

  8. Parth,

That is awesome that you're heading to Panama to do some volunteer work! If I was studying to be a doctor, I think I would want to do something like that as well. I like all animals and you're cat is really cute! Good luck in Panama, and good luck with the rest of your time at OU!

  10. Hi Parth!
First of all, that is the cutest cat I have ever seen! I hope to get a pet as soon as I move. My apartment that I live in doesn't allow pets. I think it's awesome that you're a Microbiology major. I took micro because I am pre-pharmacy and I was not very good at it! Good luck with your semester and your future medical career!

  12. Hey Parth! I'm pre-med Microbiology major currently in my junior year too! Its always exciting meeting other microbio majors on the same boat as me. I'm going to assume that you either have taken the MCAT or are about to take the new one this semester... I will be taking the new one and I already know it's going to be just awful. But aside from that, I love how you randomly got a cat! I did something similar about a year ago where I just went and brought home a cat someone was giving away. That might have been one of the most random things I've done in college.

  13. Hello Parth! That is very cool that you volunteered with Medical Brigade and that you get to go to Panama next semester! I think striving to make a difference in less fortunate countries is a very admirable goal! Shere Khan is adorable! I wish my apartment here in Norman let me have pets! Best of luck to you in reaching your goal of becoming a doctor!

  14. Hey Parth! That's cool that you are a part of OUIS! Have you even gone to India? I am currently studying in India, and I absolutely love it! I'll have to hang out around the Indian Student Associations once I get back to get a good dose of South Asian culture, and hopefully food! The cuisine here is sublime, that's for sure. Best of luck on your medical endeavors, and I hope this semester is going well for you!

  16. Parth,

thanks for sharing some stuff about yourself with us! It's always difficult to pick up and move during your high school years, I can understand why that would have been a tough experience. But it sounds like you handed it well and now probably have good friends all over the place! Your parents sound very ambitious, which I like, and it sounds like they've passed the trait on to you! Going to Panama will be an amazing experience, no doubt. I wish you the best of luck!

  17. Hi Parth,
It sounds like you are pretty busy with your activities on campus and your major! It is also so neat that you want to go out and make a difference in the world. I bet going to Panama will be a life changing experience! That is super neat that you lived in Ardmore because I have family that lives in Ardmore! They have lived in Ardmore all of there life so I know what you mean by small town. Good luck with all of your adventures with Panama and medical school!

  18. Hi, Parth! It's really great that you're so involved with things. Especially the Medical Brigade trip in Panama. I'm sure that'll be great pre-med experience, and that's also such a cool thing to do for the community there. I hope your semester is going really well! Good luck with medical school! Oh, and SK is very, very cute. Very cute.

  19. Hey Parth!

It's wonderful that you're a pre-med student who wants to help those in need, particularly in countries where there is a shortage of medical care. You have admirable intentions, and that will take you far in this world :) We need more doctors who truly care.

It is so awesome that you essentially outgrew your allergy to cats! Did this also happen with dogs or are you still allergic to them? Usually pet allergies are particularly harsh when it comes to cats, so it's amazing that you are no longer allergic. SK is precious, and what an excellent random decision!

I hope you have a fantastic experience in Panama, and best of luck to you with your degree and Med School! You will figure out your path along the way, no doubt.

  20. Hi Parth, my name is Amber and I'm a senior at OU. It's really incredible that you are doing that Medical Brigade to Panama this summer. I understand wanting to make a difference in a less fortunate place because I'm going to Africa this summer with the OU school of social work. It will be really cool to make that change and see it affect less fortunate people!

  21. Hey Parth,

It seems like we have quite a bit in common! I also enjoying serving un- or underserved communities. I attempted to go on a Medical Brigade, but the plans fell apart when I realized that I was going to need to take summer classes instead. I’m also a science-based major (HES). How do you like microbiology? I took an introductory microbiology class to fill a pre-requisite for physical therapy and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good luck in your future endeavors!

  22. Parth,

Oh my goodness. SK is so adorable. He has such beautiful coloring! His face looks very similar to a tiger (probably hence the name Bengal cat). I hope to own furry pets of my own someday (I have a dog and cat at home in Colorado).

I also used to play basketball! I love it so much. I really need to get back into the gym and play pick up with the guys sometime. I’ll definitely be rusty.

Can’t wait to explore your blog more.

  23. Hey Parth! Props to you wanting to go out there and add a little brightness to this dark world! Wanting to helping people is awesome, and a very admirable quality if I do say so myself. Do you think that you will participate in Doctors Without Boarders once you finish up medical school and you residency? Also, absolutely perfect name for your cat!

  24. Hello Parth! This is my first time visiting your introduction! Nice to meet you. That is so cool that you are born on July 4th! Haha, so it is like all of the fireworks and celebrations is for your birthday. SK is nice! I wonder how big he can get. I used to play basketball in High School. I went to Deer Creek. I remember playing your team in the tournament one year, but we got owned!

  25. Hey Parth! You seem pretty involved with groups outside of school, which is awesome! One thing I regret from my time here at OU is not getting involved! I had a great time, but didn't get very involved with extracurricular activities until the middle of my junior year. Your cat seems awesome by the way! Good luck with your senior year next year man!
